MAITLAND MERCURY, Tucker, Gillies and Thompson, proprietors.-This newspaper was started in 1843 by Thomas W. Tucker and Richard Jones, and subsequently became the sole property of Mr. Jones, who was afterwards M.P. for the Hunter, and Colonial Treasurer in the Cowper Ministry in 1857. In 1850 this gentleman sold out to Messrs. Tucker, Cracknell and Falls, and in 1861 Mr. Falls became sole proprietor; but on his death in 1874 the property was purchased by the present proprietors, Mr. C. Eipper being made editor. It was first published as a weekly, but is now a tri-weekly newspaper, and has the largest circulation in the colony outside Sydney. It is run on free-trade principles, with a Liberal-Conservative policy, and is mainly devoted to the pastoral and agricultural interests of the colony.
