Details: Some interesting sidelights on the growth of Newcastle are given by Mr. John Hanlon, for more than 50 years a resident of Newcastle and district. CELEBRATING his seventy-third birthday at his home, Hanbury- street, Mayfield, yesterday, Mr. Hanlon told the story of his long and hazardous voyage from the Old Country, and of the primitive state of affairs in the early years of Newcastle s history. Mr. Hanlon came to this country as a baby 10 months old, arriving on July 30, 1857. The ship, Aloe, took four months to come out from Eng- land, and was dis-masted twice by gales. His mother was buried at sea. His father settled first at Raymond Terrace, later going to Nundle, and then to Lambing Flat at the time of the Chinese riot. At about this time his father met the bushranger Ben Hall, who presented him with a horse, which was in turn passed on to the youthful Jack. That was the first horse I ever owned, said Mr. Hanlon, and I have spent the rest of my life among horses and stock. His first job was with Mr. H. Geary, a butcher, of Morpeth, and then with Mr. A. Cobcroft, of East Maitland, the racehorse owner. Mr. Hanlon recalls that he used to ride for the owner when he possessed Sunshine, Stock- well and other famous horses. He was also commissioned to lead Mr. John Brown s yearlings, Clarence and Newcastle, from East Maitland, where they were purchased, to Islington, where he delivered them to Mr. R. Fleming, the trainer. At Newcastle he secured a job with Mr. W. H. White, well-known as Cockie White. In those days he re- calls that water was obtained from a well behind what is now Paling s. There was also a spring near what is now Ireland s, and later a well was put down at the corner of Perkin and Hunter streets. Water was precious in those days, he says. It was all we had for drinking, and it was also used for fire-fighting. A trench was also put beneath the railway line and a pipe run down to the harbor to pump up water for fire fighting. COCKROACH ALLEY That was almost 30 years ago. What is now the bank corner was known in those days as Cockroach Alley. Mr. Hanlon has spent 54 years in Newcastle district, most of which time he has been a resident of Waratah and Mayfield.
