Master William Harrison. Surgeon Major West. 54 male convicts; 69 female convicts....The Francis and Eliza sailed from Cork in convoy in 5 December 1814. At the beginning of 1815, she was taken by the New York privateer Warrior in Long Island Sound. The ship s guns, ammunition and much of her cargo were removed into her captor, her papers were confiscated and several members of her crew, expressing a wish to desert to the Americans were allowed to remain aboard the Warrior. She resumed her interrupted voyage. Although neither participant in this incident was aware of the fact at the time, the Treaty of Paris, terminating hostilities between England and America, had already been signed.

An article, copied from a London paper of February 27, is running the rounds of the American prints, containing the most flagrant falsehoods, respecting the capture of the English ship Francis and Eliza, on the 4th of January last, by captain Champlin of the privateer Warrior. Captain Champlin assures us, that so far from releasing the convicts, (as there stated) he found then in a state of mutiny and insurrection, and supplied the captain with a guard to suppress it. He also put a crew on board of her, (of British prisoners he had captured) which made her number of seamen superior to that of the convicts. No plunder, whatever, was permitted, and she was left with a bountiful supply of everything proper for a three month voyage, with Madeira only 50 miles to leeward, I where any succours could have been procured in a. few hours had the statement of her being left in distress been true. But we are authorised to add, that the English account is false in every limb and feature NY Columbian

Personification: Hoax. The ship Francis and Eliza, bound to New South Wales with convicts, was captured, in January, by the American Privateer Warrior, when one of the female prisoners, distinguished for her personal charms, passed herself off to the captain as the well known Mrs. M. A. Clarke. Her attractions conquered the heart of the American, who implicitly believing the story she told of having been convicted upon a false charge of swindling, he took her on board, presented her with 2000 dollars in cash, besides linen, clothes, &c.; nor did he discover the imposture until he returned to port, when the lady eloped from him with a sailor, and shortly after sued him for the payment of a promissory note for .5000 dollars, which he had unthinkingly assigned her.
